Why Art Matters
Why art matters
I don’t know about you, but the world as of late has me more than a little concerned. It’s overwhelming really. And no, I don’t want to talk about all that. But I do want to talk about the importance of art, because it can be easy to brush it aside as trivial and unworthy of our attention. But I implore you not to do that! Instead, please consider these three reasons why art (visual and otherwise) matters.
1. Art is therapy.
Both the act of viewing, and creating art is therapeutic. Especially for those of us with an artistic edge. There’s just something about staring at a beautiful painting, contemplating the details and admiring the unique style of a particular artist. It can melt away stress like deep breathing or much needed sleep. I dare you to visit your favorite museum or gallery and not leave feeling inspired and hopeful.
Now of course, every artist knows that the act of creating is also therapeutic. But only if done so with the right mindset. If you are too attached the the results it can be hard to loose yourself in the process and might leave you feeling more frustrated than refreshed. But with a healthy does of “this is just for fun” and some other tips, making art can be very satisfying and one of the best forms of therapy.
2. Art is journalism.
It's no secret that artists tend to be forward thinking, observant and contemplative people. Throughout history, artists have been change makers, activist and a strong voice for the people. Not only is creating meaningful art important in the moment, but it is often what we look at to tell the story of past events. If you’re troubled by what you see in the world, instead of dismissing your art as trivial, try using art to express how you feel. Hint, you don’t have to focus on the negative if that’s too cumbersome. You can also create art that depicts the world you want to live in.
3. Art is everything.
Huh? Ok, not literally everything, but most of the best things about life. Seriously. Think about living in a world without art: no paintings, no music, no novels, no dancing, no fashion, no desserts or delicious meals… I could go on but I think I made my point. All those things are a result of the human need for expression. And without it, the world would be pretty dull to say the least.
You are a human. And I’m guessing a pretty good one too. You deserve to do more than survive. You deserve to enjoy the human experience as best you can. And enjoying art is part of that experience.
